Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint Frequently Asked Questions

Why DIY Paint?

DIY Paint is a non-toxic and all natural clay and chalk based paint. The clay is the magic ingredient which gives it the unique ability to create a variety of textures from smooth to chippy. DIY Paint is of the highest quality with the best pigments and ingredients possible. It contains only 9 ingredients! DIY Paint can be used on wood, metal, laminate, glass and even upholstery. DIY Paint is a people focused brand empowering small, independent retailers and our growing community of creative customers.

How do I prepare my furniture for paint?

DIY Paint has amazing adhesion and sticks to just about any surface. However, some preparation is required. Make sure your surface is clean and free of oil and grease. If you are painting a previously painted surface, make sure there is no actively chipping and peeling paint. For slick surfaces such as laminate and high gloss finishes, a light scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper may be required.

How can I get a smooth finish with DIY Paint?

DIY Paint will not self- level. For a smooth finish, use a good quality synthetic bristle brush and long even brush strokes. Slightly thinning the paint with water helps minimize brush strokes. A light sanding in between coats is optional. A finish sanding with a high grit sandpaper will close the pores of the paint and minimize brush strokes giving you a nice, smooth finish. You can also use DIY Paint with a sprayer.

How can I distress DIY Paint?

DIY Paint can be distressed using 220 grit sandpaper. However, because of the chalk and clay content, this will produce a fair amount of dust. My favorite method of distressing is wet distressing. This is nothing more than using a damp cloth to gently rub away paint where you want. It is easy to control and yields natural looking results.

Can I paint with more than one color of DIY Paint?

I am so glad you asked this question because it is my favorite thing to do! You can layer as many colors as you want, then use the wet distress technique to reveal all those colors. Because of the clay content in DIY Paint, it can easily be reactivated with water making it super easy to blend colors together. Need a new color? Just start mixing colors together. It’s as easy as adding two (or three or four!) colors together in a bowl and stirring until mixed.

How should I seal my project?

There are two ways to protect your finished project.

  1. With a brush-on liquid topcoat. You can use Big Top or Clear Liquid Patina. I recommend at least two coats, allowing each coat to thoroughly dry. For heavily used surfaces I recommend three coats.

  2. With DIY wax. This is my favorite. I love the look and feel of a hand rubbed wax finish. Wax is best applied with a wax brush. You want to work the wax into the pores of the paint. DIY Paint will deepen and intensify in color as you topcoat it. I apply the wax in a circular motion until I see a uniform color change. I finish up by moving my wax brush lightly over the surface back and forth in one direction. Wipe away any chunks or pieces of wax then allow your wax to dry (preferably overnight). Once it has dried, buff your project with a soft, lint free cloth to bring out a beautiful, subtle shine.

How do I age my finish?

You can use any of the colored waxes to add age, depth and dimension to your project. When using the dark and black wax, make sure to use the clear wax first. This acts as a buffer between your scary dark or black wax and the porous paint. Applying clear wax first allows you more control of your dark or black wax. You can then use more clear wax as a “magic eraser” to remove some of the dark or black wax should you want a less intense aging effect.

You can also use the Decrepit Dust which is designed to work with the clear wax. Apply your clear wax and then with a brush, work a very small amount of the dust into the wax where desired. Allow to dry and then buff.

Can I water down DIY paint?

Absolutely! And I do all the time. DIY Paint is water based. It also has the best pigmentation of any paint I have used. The intense pigmentation allows me to water down the paint without sacrificing intensity of color. This is great when layering and blending.
